Ford Explorer — Bolt Pattern

Every Explorer generation is 5×114.3 with imperial 1/2"-20 UNF studs — except the current VI (2020 on), which switched to metric M14×1.5. The hub also moved around: 70.3 mm through the body-on-frame I–IV (1990–2010), down to 63.4 mm on the unibody V (2010–2019), then back up to 70.6 mm on the VI.

Common questions

What bolt pattern does the Ford Explorer have?

Every Explorer generation is 5×114.3 with imperial 1/2"-20 UNF studs — except the current VI (2020 on), which switched to metric M14×1.5. The hub also moved around: 70.3 mm through the body-on-frame I–IV (1990–2010), down to 63.4 mm on the unibody V (2010–2019), then back up to 70.6 mm on the VI. Check the table above for your exact generation, and confirm against a wheel or the owner's handbook before buying.

Will other wheels fit my Explorer?

Only wheels with exactly the same bolt pattern — bolt pattern has no working tolerance. The centre bore must also be equal to or larger than the hub (a larger bore just needs spigot rings). A different pattern needs bolt-on adapters, which also push the wheel outward and change the track.

What is the centre bore on a Explorer?

70.6 mm on the current car. The bore is the hole in the middle of the wheel; it has to clear the hub spigot or sit on a spigot ring.

Bolt pattern is only part of fitment. The offset (ET) decides where the wheel sits in the arch — work that out with the wheel offset calculator. For tyre sizing on a new wheel width, use the tire size calculator.
