The math

How the units relate

1 psi = 6.895 kPa  ·  1 bar = 100 kPa = 14.504 psi
psi → kPa: × 6.895  ·  kPa → psi: ÷ 6.895

psi (pounds per square inch) is used on placards in the US and UK. kPa (kilopascals) is the SI unit and is common in Japan, Korea and parts of Europe. bar is roughly atmospheric pressure and is the everyday European figure — 1 bar is almost exactly 100 kPa, so 2.3 bar and 230 kPa are the same reading.

Always set pressures cold and to the placard figure — door jamb, fuel flap or manual — not the maximum stamped on the sidewall.

Common questions

How do I convert kPa to psi?

Divide the kilopascal figure by 6.895. So 220 kPa ÷ 6.895 ≈ 31.9 psi, and 250 kPa ≈ 36.3 psi. To go the other way, multiply psi by 6.895: 35 psi ≈ 241 kPa.

How do I convert psi to bar?

Divide psi by 14.504, or multiply by 0.0689. 32 psi ≈ 2.21 bar; 35 psi ≈ 2.41 bar. 1 bar is exactly 100 kPa and about 14.5 psi.

What is the correct tire pressure for my car?

Use the figure on the placard in the driver's door jamb (or the fuel-filler flap or owner's manual) — not the number moulded on the tyre sidewall, which is the maximum the tyre can take, not the recommended pressure. Set pressures cold, before driving. Most passenger cars sit between 30 and 36 psi (210–250 kPa / 2.1–2.5 bar).

Is 40 psi too high for tires?

For most passenger cars, 40 psi is above the placard figure and will give a firmer ride and more centre wear, but it is usually still within the tyre's limit. Some cars — heavily loaded, or with high-load-rating tyres — do specify 40+ psi. Check the placard; do not exceed the tyre's stamped maximum.

What is 2.5 bar in psi?

2.5 bar = 250 kPa ≈ 36.3 psi. 2.0 bar ≈ 29 psi, 2.2 bar ≈ 32 psi, 3.0 bar ≈ 43.5 psi.

Methodology

Conversions use the exact definitions: 1 psi = 6.894757293 kPa and 1 bar = 100 kPa. Values are displayed to a practical precision (psi to one decimal, kPa to the nearest whole number, bar to two decimals). Tyre-pressure guidance is general — the correct figure for your car is on its placard, and pressures should be checked cold.
