Measure centre-to-centre of the holes, not edge-to-edge. On a 5-stud pattern, use two neighbouring holes.

Already know the pattern? See which vehicles share each bolt pattern, or look up your car in the wheel fitment database.

Useful? Share it with someone who's picking tires or wheels.

How to measure

Studs highlighted in colour are the two you put the tape between — always centre of hole to centre of hole.

S

4-stud

Measure straight across, centre of one hole to the centre of the hole opposite. That distance is the PCD.

S

5-stud

No hole sits opposite another, so measure centre-to-centre of two neighbouring holes and let the calculator do the trig.

S

6-stud

Measure across, centre to centre of two opposite holes. That is the PCD directly.

S

8-stud

Same as 6-stud — measure centre to centre straight across two opposite holes.

Measuring edge-to-edge instead of centre-to-centre is the most common mistake — it throws the PCD off by one hole diameter. If the holes are slotted or worn, measure several pairs and average.

"Adjacent-stud gap" is what you would measure between two neighbouring holes on that pattern — handy for checking a wheel against its label.

The math

Where the number comes from

even stud count: PCD = distance across two opposite holes
odd (5) stud count: PCD = adjacent-hole distance / sin(180° / studs)

The studs sit on a circle. For an even count two studs are always diametrically opposite, so the straight-across measurement is the circle's diameter. For 5 studs the neighbouring holes are 72° apart around that circle, and a bit of trigonometry turns the chord between them into the diameter — dividing by sin(36°), i.e. by 0.5878.

Bolt pattern is only half of fitment. The centre bore has to clear the hub (or use a spacer ring), and the offset decides where the wheel sits in the arch — check that with the wheel offset calculator.

Common questions

How do I measure a 5-lug bolt pattern?

You can't measure straight across a 5-stud wheel because no hole is directly opposite another. Measure the centre-to-centre distance between two neighbouring holes and convert: PCD = that distance ÷ sin(36°), which is ÷ 0.5878. A rough field method: measure from the back edge of one hole to the centre of the hole two positions away — that is close to the PCD.

How do I measure a 4, 6 or 8-lug pattern?

On an even stud count there is a hole directly opposite each one, so measure centre-to-centre straight across two opposite holes and that distance is the pitch circle diameter (PCD).

What does 5x112 mean?

Five studs, on a circle 112 mm in diameter. The first number is the stud count, the second is the pitch circle diameter. 5x114.3 is the same idea in a size that is also written 5x4.5 inches.

Will a 5x112 wheel fit a 5x114.3 hub?

No. The two patterns are only about 2.3 mm apart, but bolt pattern has no tolerance — it has to match exactly. Forcing a 2 mm-off wheel on puts the studs in bind and only catches part of each nut's thread. A mismatch needs proper bolt-on adapters.

Are wobble bolts safe?

Wobble or floating-seat bolts allow roughly ±2 mm and are used in motorsport to run one wheel set across similar cars. Most wheel and vehicle makers do not approve them for road use — a hub-specific adapter is the safer fix for a permanent mismatch.

What bolt pattern does my car have?

It depends on make, model and generation — a VW on the MQB platform is 5x112, most BMWs are 5x120, a lot of Japanese cars are 5x114.3. Check the figure against your handbook or measure a wheel with this tool; a per-vehicle lookup is coming.

Methodology

PCD is derived from the stud count and one measured distance using the chord-to-diameter relationship (PCD = chord / sin(180° / n) for adjacent holes; the opposite-hole distance for even counts). The "closest standard" is the nearest entry in a fixed list of the bolt patterns used on passenger cars and light trucks; a match within about 0.6 mm is treated as exact. Compatibility is a strict equality check — bolt patterns do not have a working tolerance. Make lists are a general guide, not a per-vehicle lookup.
